Select the Erase tab, then confirm.
Working with the application
This will erase the entire disk. If you want, you can select Security Options , then move the slider on that window to the first position from the left or select Zero-Out Data on Snow Leopard and earlier to physically erase the entire disk by writing over everything. This may not work if the drive is already set up with a non-Apple Partition Map Scheme , such as is used on Windows. If that happens, just continue with item c.
Select the Partition tab, then set the number of partitions from the pop-up menu below Volume Scheme use 1 partition unless you need more.
Then set the Format. Usually, that will be the default: Mac OS Extended Journaled.
For your Time Machine partition, there are two considerations: If in doubt, see the pink box below. Set any other partitions to the desired format. If in doubt about them, see Disk Formats.
How to Move Time Machine to a New Backup Drive
When you've got everything the way you want it, click Apply and wait a few moments for the process to complete. If you get a message saying " Could not unmount disk ," some other process is using or trying to use the disk: If all else fails, start your Mac up from a different source: If you're not sure what version of OSX you're running, click here. Once Time Machine is configured properly, your Mac will backup hourly for the past 24 hours, daily for the past month and will save a weekly backup for all previous months to an external hard drive or external SSD solid state drive. If you turn your machine off regularly or use a MacBook, your backups will continue automatically when you plug your external drive back in and your Mac is on.

The beautiful part about Time Machine is that it will keep backing up your new information even if your drive fills up, in which case it will delete the oldest backups. You may also notice if you are using a MacBook that the automatic backup may not start until you plug in your power adapter. This backup estimated minutes, but it ended up actually taking two hours.
